Meet the Members - Hilary Wardhaugh

Meet the Members! Today we bring you this deeply moving and powerful new work made by PhotoAccess member Hilary Wardhaugh.

For the last 3 months I have been making self portraits after a diagnosis of a malignant lump in my right breast. I have been experimenting with re-staging historical paintings and documenting daily portraits through my radiotherapy. This has been valuable to do for my mental health, having to occupy my mind on creative pursuits rather than dwell on the possibility of what could be. I decided to attempt some camera obscura self portraits, also.

The portrait in my bedroom with my cat was the very first attempt. The other two images include one with me outside the camera looking in and one inside the camera looking out.

The self portrait of me looking out and towards the light makes me look determined and strong.
